My name is Brian Calhoun, and I am a second-year graduate student in the Human Development & Family Studies doctoral program at The Pennsylvania State University. I received my undergraduate degree in biology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2008, and then I spent the following two years living and traveling in Southern California. I returned to school in 2011 and eventually earned a second bachelor's degree in psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013. My areas of concentration in the HDFS program at Penn State are individual development and methodology. I am currently working on my master's thesis and expect to complete my master's degree in December of 2015.
Education:

Virginia Commonwealth University
B.S. (2008) in Biology

Research Interests:
Broadly, my interests lie in the development and health promotion of adolescents and emerging adults. More specifically, I am interested in parenting factors and time use factors associated with substance use in both of these populations that may help inform prevention efforts. I am also interested in positive youth development and the transition to adulthood. My current project is exploring the relation between college students' perceived parental permissibility of alcohol use and their drinking and its negative consequences.
Teaching Interests:
Adolescent Development; Transition to Adulthood; Life Span Human Development; Research Methods
